I’m privileged to be the senior Ward Member or “Deputy” for the ancient Ward of Cheap and have enjoyed a long association with the Ward since I first moved to London in the 1990’s. I joined the Ward of Cheap Club, a great organisation of people who work in or simply love the Ward, at the invitation of a friend and haven’t looked back.
I was admitted as a solicitor at international law firm Hogan Lovells on Holborn Viaduct in 1998 and have practiced ever since in the City and Holborn area. I’ve been a Partner at Memery Crystal LLP since 2006 which is only a short distance from the Ward.
I served 12 years as a Councillor on Westminster City Council with the last eight as Chairman of its Planning & City Development Committee. In 2013 I stood for election to the City Corporation in the Ward of Cheap and it has been my pleasure to serve the residents, workers and visitors to the Ward since then; I am in the Ward nearly everyday.
Since being elected I have been an active member looking after the Ward interests by engaging with the various businesses in Cheap to explore how the City Corporation can work with its firms, banks and numerous business interests. Of particular note has been my lead role for the Corporation on the Cheapside Business Alliance, which has helped transform the area for greater good.
I am additionally honoured to chair the Investment Committee of the City Corporation, which looks after all the City’s public, private and charitable assets for public benefit. In this capacity I also chair the Property Investment Board. All City investment funds are faring well, allowing the City Corporation to do much good with its assets to help fund schools, the arts, Crossrail, charities, policing, the courts service, parks, UK and City promotion overseas and numerous other causes.
I have also been able to give my time to many other City committees too, including being Deputy Chairman of the Planning and Transportation Committee. Additionally I assist a Church Charity as a Trustee, am a board member of a large social housing association, am a non-exec on a main-list plc set up to free up funds for housing and serve in the Goldsmith’s Company in the Ward of Cheap by sitting on its House Committee, which looks after the magnificent Goldsmith’s Hall on Foster Lane.
In my capacity as an officer in the Army Reserve I’ve also been a Marshal for the Lord Mayor’s Parade for several years. I reside in central London, a mile or two from the Ward and enjoy visiting the City at weekends with my young family.
If you have any local or City issues that you would like to discuss with me, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. I would be delighted to hear from you.
Please use one of your three votes for me on 23 March if you are a voter in the City Elections, so that I can continue to serve the City and the Ward of Cheap.
